Life VS Business – Case 1: Coffee Spoons

Brett Miller - Coffee Spoons

Life- Annoying Coffee Spoons.

I appreciate the idea of giving someone a spoon with their coffee as a way to stir sugar, milk, etc. However, I drink my coffee black and the spoon always arrives already in the coffee and without a saucer below it. What do I do with this spoon? I can’t drink while it’s in there, I don’t have a napkin to set it on, so it’s just going to have to leave a little coffee puddle on the table for the waitress. If you’re going to give me a spoon, give me some place to put it.

Business- Never follow up with a dead end.

When you’re trying to be proactive, it’s important not to limit your thinking to “next step” only. You must always think at least 2 steps ahead. When you’re writing an e-mail, don’t just follow up, follow up with a call to action (set a meeting date, issue homework, etc.). If you send a client an article, explain why the article is relevant to them and include ideas on how to use it.

Verdict – You can always leave a dripping spoon on the counter and leave more work for your server… they’ll move on, but if you follow up with a dead end, your contact won’t.
